Leaders, it’s not just your words that lead people...it’s your face.

Let me share something I’ve learned after years behind the mic and in front of the camera.
Leaders, it’s not just your words that lead people...it’s your face.

I’ve seen incredibly smart leaders lose their audience—not because their message was wrong, but because their facial expression never connected. It stayed flat. Guarded. Disengaged. And the audience felt it instantly. The shocking thing is this starts the minute you appear on camera and mic, and turns people away in as few as 3 - 7 seconds.
There’s a reason for that…
Studies show up to 70% of communication is non-verbal—and a huge part of that lives right in your face. That’s one reason why you need to properly light your face when you are on camera. Because people want to SEE and FEEL what you are really saying, not just hear the words coming out of your mouth.
Because if your eyes aren’t engaged, if your expression doesn’t match your message, if there’s no emotional signal coming through, people don’t lean in. They pull back. It often boils down to the fact that they don’t believe or trust you, so they can’t follow you.
Have you ever felt this way while presenting virtually?
Let me give you three things I’ve learned to do—and coached others to master:
First… lead with your eyes.
It’s been said that the “Eyes are the gateway to the soul.”
So when you’re on camera, don’t “look” at the lens—connect through it. I always imagine one real person sitting on the other side who needs to hear what I’m about to say. That changes everything.
Second… make your face tell the same story as your words.
If you’re talking about something that matters, let it show. Your audience will believe your face faster than they’ll believe your script.
Third… feel it before you say it.
This is the game-changer. Before I speak—whether I’m hosting, interviewing, or teaching—I take a beat and connect to the emotion behind the message. That’s what creates that real, heart-to-heart moment.
Because here’s the truth…
People don’t follow words; they follow felt trust.
And trust is built in those small, human moments—in your eyes, your expression, your presence. And when you get that right…you’re not just communicating anymore...Connecting at a much deeper level builds trust. And that’s where real leadership lives.
